When hairstylist Barry Lee Moe took on the job of turning Sebastian Stan into Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, he thought a wig would help embody the 1990s rocker’s look. But for Hulu’s limited series “Pam & Tommy,” which premieres Feb. 2 on Hulu, Stan wanted the freedom to touch his hair and feel it. “He wanted it to feel lived in,” explains Moe.

“We were walking across the parking lot, going to the studio, and there was a grip on the back of one of the trucks, talking on his cell phone,” says David Williams, the makeup department head on Hulu’s new limited series, Pam & Tommy. “When she walked by in her full Pam garb, he literally almost fell off the back of the truck—had to catch himself. I looked at her and said, ‘Well, we didn’t kill anybody, but I think we got it right.’”

As Pam & Tommy makeup department head David Williams tells it, even those on set while filming the show were blown away by James’s transformation. Williams was walking across the lot with James on the way to set, with James in “full-on Pam regalia,” he says, and as they walked by, one of the show’s grips almost fell off the back of a truck when he caught sight of her.

2021 was “the year of the penis,” according to special makeup effects designer Jason Collins. He estimates his company Autonomous FX, which usually works on effects-heavy projects like Blade Runner 2049 and Grey’s Anatomy, has made 15 different dicks over the last 18 months or so. “I would say that it did start with Euphoria, probably about two years ago,” he says, estimating when he started getting an uptick of phallus requests.

“I think all of us equally wanted to celebrate Pam, but also tell her story in the most accurate way we could,” costume designer Kameron Lennox recently told ELLE.com, when asked about the careful tap-dance between hair, makeup, and costume teams. Added hair department head Barry Lee Moe, “My biggest thing was to bring humanity and life to a woman that is so iconic, and to not make it a caricature of who she was.”

Predictably, the internet went wild, drumming up all kinds of anticipation for the series. The two stars, both known for more family-friendly fare (in Mamma Mia 2 and Marvel respectively) had undergone awards-worthy transformations, sporting platinum bangs, nipple-rings and heavy ink.

Tasked with transforming British beauty James into Anderson and Marvel star Stan into Lee, makeup department head David Williams, hair department head Barry Lee Moe, and special effects head Jason Collins closely collaborated to create convincing doppelgängers for the real-life icons. With plenty of reference material from the tabloid-hungry era, the three looked at magazine articles and press images of Anderson and Lee to begin developing their own vision of who Pam and Tommy are in the context of the show.

The metamorphosis was the work of a team led by award-winning visuals experts, including the head of makeup David Williams, hair department head Barry Lee Moe and special makeup effects designer, Jason Collins. "When those first images hit the internet, it was validation for something that we were already feeling was happening," Williams said in a video interview. "Certain projects have kinetic energy about them. That's undeniable. And this is one of those shows."

The series stars Lily James as Anderson and Sebastian Stan as Lee, and both are virtually unrecognizable thanks to eerily accurate hair and makeup. Both actors spent hours in their trailers before shooting every day to transform into their respective characters — a process that included wigs, fake tattoos, eyebrow hair pieces, prosthetic breasts, and...a prosthetic penis. Ahead, the hair, makeup, and special effects team break down what it took to turn James and Stan into one of the most famous couples of the 1990s.

Four hours in the hair and makeup chair — that's how long it took Lily James to transform into Pamela Anderson. And Sebastian Stan to become Tommy Lee? Three hours. That's how you know the beauty looks in Hulu's miniseries "Pam & Tommy" are going to be good. As far as beauty transformations go, the ones James and Stan underwent to get into character for the show were extreme. Twenty-five wigs, 150 prosthetics (on just James alone), and countless fake tattoos were applied to tell the story of Anderson and Lee's whirlwind relationship in the '90s.

For any biographical portrayal, especially for someone as famous as Anderson, one of the biggest challenges for the makeup and costume teams is making sure it doesn’t come across like a caricature. “You run the risk of it looking artificial and sort of costumey, and the last thing you want is your actor to be almost in drag as Pam Anderson,” says hair department head Barry Lee Moe. “You want to create realistic, honest portrayals of these people.” Especially, in this case, because Anderson refused to be a part of the process.

Back when 1995 was young, Pamela Anderson and her new husband, Tommy Lee, the drummer for the flashy metal combo Mötley Crüe, were on top of the world. She was starring in the TV hit “Baywatch,” and while his band was past its 1980s prime, he could still live la vida rocka in their Malibu mansion. You can’t blame them for wanting to preserve some of their happiest moments — including some very naked, very sexual ones — for posterity, with the help of a Hi8 camcorder. And then, much to the couple’s dismay, the footage got out. And got around.

She lived and breathed beauty and glamour and will forever be an icon in my eyes.”

David Williams, makeup-department head; Barry Lee Moe, hair-department head; and Jason Collins, special-effects-makeup designer, put James through a rigorous getting-ready process that could take anywhere from three to five hours of makeup and prosthetics. The Cut talked to the team about the details of the transformation, the beauty products you can use to get a Pamela lip, and all about the creation of a certain talking penis puppet.

“We painstakingly went back and forth and resculpted Pamela’s breasts at least three or four times in order to get them just right,” special makeup effects and prosthetics designer Jason Collins told The Post of re-creating Anderson’s key features just so for James. His company, Autonomous FX, outfitted James and co-star Sebastian Stan, 39, who stars as Mötley Crüe rocker Tommy Lee, with well over $100,000 in prosthetics.

"We tried to really go into the psychology of these characters, of where they were at at that time," says "Pam & Tommy" costume designer Kameron Lennox, pointing out that Anderson was at the "height of her fame" during this period, on the cusp of the release of her first headlining film, "Barb Wire."

"Nobody wanted to take the shortcut or compromise on anything," Jason Collins, special makeup effects designer for "Pam & Tommy," says, speaking for makeup department head David Williams, hair department head Barry Lee Moe and costume designer Kameron Lennox. "It's one of those rare projects where everybody is firing on all cylinders and lightning strikes."

Lily James’ transformation for Hulu’s Pam & Tommy continuously has Us doing a double take. But how did she achieve her doppelgänger status with Pamela Anderson? Well, it took nearly four hours in the glam chair each and every day, a lineup of wigs, prosthetics and even fake eyebrows. Making sure that James’ facial structure mirrored that of Anderson’s was key — albeit a little tricky. Makeup department head David Williams told Harper’s Bazaar in a Tuesday, February 1, interview that recreating the 54-year-old actress’ look required the use of a prosthetic forehead to “widen the distance between James’ brows and hairline.”

The new question on everyone’s mind became how the team behind Pam & Tommy executed such impressive, head-turning transformations. The Hollywood magic comes from the combined decades of experience that makeup department head David Williams, hair department head Barry Lee Moe, and prosthetics designer Jason Collins bring to the eight-part miniseries. Williams and Moe are veterans of Ryan Murphy’s TV universe, with Williams winning Emmys for his makeup work on American Crime Story and Feud [as well as a 2009 win for MADtv].

The world was blown away in May when the first images of Lily and Sebastian as Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee were revealed, and the award-winning make-up, hair, and prosthetics team behind the transformation have revealed how they got the characters so spot on. Lily James transformed into Pamela Anderson for the Pam & Tommy TV series with the help of her glam squad. Her hairstylist, Barry Lee Moe, re-created Anderson’s iconic bombshell Baywatch waves using styling products from UNITE Hair. Moe is an award-winning celebrity hairstylist. “So much of Pam’s look is timeless, but also very, very ’90s in other ways. Her haircut was always super-layered and textured throughout, and using all the tools in our respective departments, we were really able to take it to that classic ’90s look,” said Moe in a recent interview with Harper's Bazaar.

James, who plays former “Baywatch” actress Pamela Anderson, was virtually unrecognizable with her pencil-thin eyebrows, platinum blonde hair and voluptuous figure, while Stan, who plays Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, was seen sporting a nearly identical replica of the figure’s plethora of body tattoos. Both stars’ transformations can be credited in large part to the show’s extensive makeup, hair and prosthetics departments, which spent roughly four hours each day turning them into their respective characters. The looks were led by makeup department head David Williams, hair department head Barry Lee Moe and special effects makeup designer Jason Collins.

When you catch a glimpse of Lily James running on the beach in that iconic red swimsuit, it’s easy to think you’re looking at Baywatch footage of Pamela Anderson herself. Tattoos are an integral part of movies and TV. Sebastian Stan is covered in them for his role as Tommy Lee in "Pam & Tommy"; Hilary Duff had to hide all but two of hers for "How I Met Your Father"; and all traces of their existence were erased on Lady Gaga's arms for "House of Gucci." Pete Davidson has even decided to get his extensive tattoo collection removed after spending too much time in the makeup chair on set. Aside from aesthetics purposes, the reason behind that is more complex than you may realize.

Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy” has set the internet alight as viewers tune in each week to see Lily James and Sebastian Stan take on the wild antics of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee. Costume designer Kameron Lennox worked on nailing the signature looks such as that iconic red “Baywatch” outfit, as well as tailoring outfits to fit the prosthetics needed on Stan as he struts around in thongs.

Costume designer Kameron Lennox had the task of planning, sourcing, and altering the show’s extensive wardrobe. As a period piece, Pam & Tommy immerses viewers in ‘90s Los Angeles, when today’s covetable vintage pieces were fresh off the runway. The veteran designer is no small part of the show’s runaway success. The wardrobe she and her team crafted has received praise for its accuracy and style.

"When we saw it all come together with the hair, the makeup, the prosthetics, the costumes and then Lily's gestures, she embodied the character," says Kameron Lennox, the show's costume designer. "There were a few moments where I had to step back and take a breath." Some of those breathtaking looks were historic, culture-defining outfits recreated for the show, such as the famed Baywatch swimsuit, corsets for the movie Barb Wire and the white wedding bikini and sarong Pam married Tommy in after they'd met just four days prior.

Likewise, on “Pam & Tommy,” a Hulu series that presents a fictionalized version of the events surrounding the release of a sex tape stolen from Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee in 1995, style is a means of being taken seriously in the eye of the law. For Pam, that means donning a sea foam suit jacket and a matching miniskirt as she delivers her testimony, looking businesslike but defiantly glamorous.

Working closely with the show's hair and makeup departments, Lennox helped transform James and Stan into eerily spot-on Anderson and Lee doppelgangers. When the paparazzi captured set photos of James filming in a red "Baywatch" one-piece, well before "Pam & Tommy" debuted, fans could hardly believe how much the British actor resembled the Canadian model.
